조각<성찬>은 밀웜이 스티로폼을 먹는다는 최근 밝혀진 연구를 읽고 직접 실험한 작업이다. 환기, 온도 유지 시스템이 있는 사면이 스티로폼이 된 집을 만들고, 그안에서 식용용 밀웜을 키운다. 성체인 갈색거저리가 될 때에에 밀웜을 방생 후, 갉아 먹힌 남은 스티로폼을 모아 사진으로 기록한다.

“생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라”라는 창조자의 말을 무색하게 자신의 입맛대로 이해 하고 남용한 결과, 이젠 수습하기 힘든 재앙이 벌어진듯 하다. ‘먹기’를 통해 피조세계와 진실된 관계맺던 지난날은 유치한 옛 신화가 되어버렸고 그때에 느낀 경이로움은 어느새 잊혀지고 생략되어 한갓 불만거리나 공포의 대상이 되어버렸다.

한갓 반려동물의 먹이에 불과했던 밀웜이 환경문제의 주된 원인인 스티로폼을 먹는다는 사실은 그것의 가치를 단번에 격상시킨 것처럼 느껴진다. 과학자들은 자신들의 연구가 대단한 발견인 마냥 떠들지 모르겠지만, 어쩌면 지금도 저기 서해안의 쌓인 부서진 부표를 부단히도 갉아 먹고있는 갯지렁이가 들으면 비웃을 이야기이다. 인간이 ‘미물’이라 불린 이들은 우리와 무관하게 그들의 생태계에서 아주 잘 살아가고 있다. 인간이 그들에게 음흉한 관심을 주지 않으면 말이다. “생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라”라는 창조자의 말을 인간 입맛대로 이해하고 자연을 남용 한 결과로 전염병 ,온실 효과, 오존층 파괴, 열대림 파괴, 땅과 수질 오염 등 이제는 수습하기 힘든 자연재앙이 벌어졌다. 이러한 상황에서 가벼움과 우수한 열차단성 때문에 포장 용품, 건물 단열재, 조형 재료 등의 용도로 대량 생산 되어 쓰이고 있다가 갑자기 환경오염 물질로 눈총 받고있는 스티로폼을 보면 안쓰러움을 느낄 수밖에 없다. 스티로폼의 완전한 입장이 될 수는 없겠지만, 인간의 도구로써의 쓰임인 아닌 스티로폼의 ‘자연스러움’을 스티로폼과 밀웜의 관계에서 찾아 짐작한다면 그들의 억울한 누명을 벗겨주리라.. 

 밀웜이 먹고 남긴 구멍들은 징그러움과 혐오감을 자아낸다. (이와 유사한 느낌을 환공포증이라고 하는데 인류학적 추측으로는 과거 인간에게 유해한 독성이 있는 동물들이 군집된 동그라미 무늬를 가졌다고 해서 그때 남아있는 질병과 위험에 대한 회피감정이 지금까지 느껴진다고 한다. 이런 공포는 자연의 숭고와 가까이 맞닿아있다. 왜 우리가 자연의 경이로움이라 감탄하는 내셔널지오그래피 속 물소를 잡 아먹는 밀림의 왕 사자, 숫양을 낚아채는 하늘의 제왕 독수리를 생각해보라. 그들이 우리를 사냥감으로 본다고 생각하면 그것이 공포이지 않겠느냐.) 그 두려움을 불평않으며 모두의 생을 위한 불편한 배려를 시작한다면, 그 속에서 녹여져있는 창조자의 거칠고 숭고한 숨결이 들리지 모른다.

The fact that Mealworms, which were only food for pets, eat Styrofoam, the main cause of environmental problems, seems to have elevated its value at once. Scientists may not say that their research is a great discovery, but perhaps it is still a story to be laughed at by the mealworms who constantly nibble on the broken buoys on the west coast. Those who are called “small things” live very well in their ecosystem regardless of us, unless humans give them insidious attention. As a result of abusing nature and understanding the creator's words of "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it" according to human tastes, natural disasters such as infectious diseases, greenhouse effects, ozone depletion, tropical forest destruction, and land and water pollution have now occurred. In this situation, I feel sorry for Styrofoam, which is used in large quantities for packaging, building insulation, and sculptural materials due to its lightness and excellent thermal protection, but has suddenly become a dangerous environmental pollutant. Although it may not be a complete standpoint for Styrofoam, It may not be a complete position of Styrofoam, but if you find the "naturalness" of Styrofoam, not a human tool, in the relationship between Styrofoam and Milwaam, you will clear them of their unfair accusations.. 

 The holes that Mealworm left behind create disgust and nasty. (A similar feeling is called trypophobia, anthropological speculation is that toxic animals that were harmful to humans in the past have clustered circular patterns, so the remaining feelings of disease and danger can be felt until now. This kind of fear comes close to the sublime of nature. Think of the Lion, king of jungle who eats buffalo in National Geography, who we admire for the wonders of nature, and the Eagle, king of heaven who catches the ram. Wouldn't it be fear if they thought we were prey.) If you don't complain of the fear and start uncomfortable consideration for everyone's life, you may hear the rough, noble breath of the creator dissolved in it.
