단열, 포장, 건축 등 이름을 달리하며 여러 유용한 용도로 쓰이는 스티로폼이 이제는 도처에 없는 곳이 없다. 최근에는 배달 시장이 발전하면서 신선제품 포장용의 스티로폼 사용량이 더욱이 급증하였고, 뒤늦게 폐기 문제를 두고 재활용이 불편하고 오랫동안 썩지 않는다며 안타깝게도 골칫거리로 전락한 처지이다.

한때 서해안 군사분계선이 근접한 교동도에서 경계근무병으로 병역의무를 하던 나는 조류를 따라 유랑하는 부표에 몸을 맡겨 귀순한 탈북인을 마주하게 되었다. 놀랍게도 그때의 해양 쓰레기인 스티로폼은 당장에 구명대가 되어 그를 망망대해의 공포스런 외로움에서 구제해낸 것이다. 한편 나는 국가 안보를 위해 충성하며 가지게 된 자긍심과 내무 부조리로 인한 피로를 일시에 겪고 있었고, 이 사건은 헌신할 나라가 없는 바다 국경에서 부유하는 부표를 경계의 대상에서 동경의 대상으로 느끼도록 했었다.

영상<스티로폼맨>은 당시 귀순 사건을 기반으로 꾸며진 픽션이다. 과거의 나를 1인칭의 ‘피사체’로 투영시킨다. 전역과 함께 금지와 명령 속의 사회가 종료된 줄 알았지만, 무한해 보이는 자유와 이윤 추구의 세계는 타자에 대한 경계심을 스스로에게 까지 치닫게 했다. 끝내 ‘청년’은 이념의 끝자락인 초소에서 경계 밖을 흘겨 보던 지난 군시절의 자신을 기억하고, 동경했던 부표가 되고자 한다.

Styrofoam, a widely used material used in various ways such as insulation, packaging, and construction, has become omnipresent in our daily lives. Its use for packaging fresh products has seen a significant surge, particularly with the growth of the delivery market. However, its non-biodegradable nature and inconvenient recycling process have posed significant challenges and have turned it into a nuisance.

During my military service as a guard on Gyodong Island near the Military Demarcation Line, I had a remarkable encounter with a North Korean defector. He was discovered clinging to a buoy, drifting in the ocean. To my surprise, it was Styrofoam, a form of marine garbage, that provided him solace in the face of the harrowing isolation of the boundless sea. While I took pride in serving my country and contributing to national security, I couldn’t escape the fatigue brought on by internal irregularities. This incident led me to view the Styrofoam buoy, floating amidst the waves, as an object worthy of admiration.

The video, titled <Styrofoam-Man>, is a work of fiction inspired by that particular defection case. It portrays the past version of myself as the first-person subject of the narrative. Although I believed that the society of prohibition and order had come to an end following my discharge from the military, the seemingly boundless world of profit-seeking made me increasingly cautious of others. Eventually, this ‘young man’ reminisces about his time in the military, when he would cast his gaze beyond the confines of his country from a guard post situated on the edge of ideology, yearning to become the buoy that he so admired.
